Lydia Ko is only 18 years, 4 months, and 20 days old, and she is already celebrating a year for the history books. The young New Zealand superstar started off her LPGA season by capturing the title of world No. 1 while still just 17 years of age, making her the youngest player male or female to earn the No. 1 world ranking in the history of professional golf. Lydia Ko has since added to her achievements with a 2015 record season that includes 4 tournament wins, 12 top ten finishes, and now a major title under her belt for 2015.
On September 13, 2015, Lydia Ko claimed the trophy at the Evian Masters in Evian, France. The Evian Masters is the LPGA's 5th and final major tournament of the season, and one that is celebrated as much for its beautiful vistas as it is for its level of competition. Shooting a record low round of 63 on Sunday to capture the win made Lydia Ko the youngest woman in history to win a major championship title. Her performance also broke records elsewhere. Aside from the incredible fact that Lydia is accomplishing so much at just 18 years old, her score of 63 became the lowest recorded final round score in the history of women's golf majors.
The Evian Masters was no more excited to announce Lydia's win than Lydia Ko herself. The young, social media trend setter had fun posting a number of pics to Instagram, including sitting on the Evian sign with and without staff around, and of course, her familiar selfie with the trophy as well. She is, after all, just a teenager.
In the words of Lydia Ko, "Winning a major at any age is amazing. Being the youngest is cool! I can still hardly believe I can leave my name a little bit in the history books."
